Halloween In Asia

Halloween is one of the oldest holidays celebrated by people from different countries all over the world. In most western countries like US and Canada, carved pumpkins and corn stalks sprawled all over the suburbs, trick-or-treating, and costume depicting scary creatures are staple practices during the festival. However, Asians celebrate Halloween in a slightly different way.
China

Chinese have their own way of celebrating the Halloween or Teng Chieh in their local dialect. People offer water and food, and light lanterns to guide the spirits of their deceased loved ones as they traverse the land of the living on Halloween night. Moreover, pilgrims visiting Buddhist temples make paper boats that symbolize the spirits of the dead. The purpose of this custom is twofold: as a remembrance of the spirits of the dead and in order to free the spirits of the restless souls so that they may go peacefully to heaven. These restless souls or pretas are spirits and reincarnated scary creatures of those who died tragically, which are believed to cause trouble among the living. Having these scary creatures around is considered bad luck by Chinese people. This is why monks are called to chant verses and incantations to free these souls from bondage.

Hong Kong

In the same manner, people from Hong Kong also celebrate the Halloween festival to guide the spirits back to their world. In their culture, spirits are believed to roam the earth on the day before November 1. They burn pictures of fruits or money believing that these images would reach the spirit world and bring comfort to the ghosts. Yue Lan or Festival of the Hungry Ghosts is a time for people to honor the spirit of the dead.

Japan

Japanese celebrate their own version of Halloween which they call Obon Festival. During this time of the year, special dishes are prepared, bright red lanterns are hung in every house and lanterns are placed afloat on rivers and boats. Lights are lit to show the spirits where their families might be found. Japanese families clean memorial stones for they believe that their deceased ancestors will go back to their birthplaces. Unlike in other countries, the Obon Festival/Halloween is celebrated during July/August.

Korea

Koreans commemorate the Halloween or Chusok during the month of August. Families visit the tombs and mausoleums and offer food, drink and flowers to show respect to their dead ancestors.

Halloween Practices and Asian Values

In all these practices, we see that Halloween is usually spent to honor and commemorate the spirits of deceased relatives and loved ones. These spirits are not commonly depicted as scary creatures or creatures of the night out to get a piece of the living. Instead, these souls are portrayed by their tradition as spirits who long to be with their families. Hence, we can say that the Asian’s closely knit family orientation is greatly seen even on Halloween.

Culture is enriched by practices and holidays like Halloween. No matter from which vantage point you look at it, whether it’s from a European or an Asian perspective, Halloween will always be one holiday to look forward to anywhere around the world.

Vegetarian Festival Phuket Thailand

The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is a nine-day Taoist celebration beginning on the eve of 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar, which is observed primarily in Southeast Asian countries like Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, and also the Riau Islands.

Here in Phuket the Festival is celebrated in the most gruesome fashion.

The festivities in Phuket include a procession of mah song wearing elaborate costumes who pierce their cheeks and tongues with all manner of things, including swords, banners, machine guns, table lamps, and flowers. While the face is the most common area pierced, some also pierce their arms with pins and fishhooks. Teams of people accompany the mah song to keep their wounds clean and to help support the heavier piercings. It is believed that while they are possessed the mah song will not feel any pain. They can also be seen shaking their heads back and forth continually, and usually do not seem to “see” their surroundings. At the temple during the festival there is also firewalking and blade-ladder climbing. While large crowds of people gather to watch, the entranced mah song distribute blessed candy and pieces of orange cloth with Chinese characters printed on them, yang for good luck.

The commitments to participate in the festival are as follows:
• Cleanliness of the body during the festival
• Clean kitchen utensils not to be used by others who do not participate in the festival
• Wear white during the festival
• Behave physically and mentally
• Avoid eating meat
• Avoid sex
• Avoid alcohol
• People in mourning should not participate
• Pregnant women and menstruating women should not attend ceremonies
This was my first year at the festival and it was incredible. Not to be missed for 2012 !!!

Best Club Nightlife Patong Phuket

As promised in our last blog, today’s segment is going to focus a little more on some of the best bars and clubs in Patong and various other locations in Phuket, the different atmospheres, music, and people they supply, and which features makes each club unique and different in its own way.

1) Seduction Beach Club & Disco – Although you may think we are biased as this is one of the clubs we are associated with, it truly is the most visited, biggest, and best club in Patong. Catering fully to foreigners with its modern design, multi levels, and playing mostly house music and hip hop, Seduction has something for everyone. Its first level is designed like a hippie beach hut more for the relaxed crowd playing all the hottest hip hop and R’n’B tunes. The Second floor is aimed more for the crazy party goes looking to dance the night away as international Djs spin seductive house and trance. For the posh sophisticated crowd, Seduction also has BLOW, the only open air VIP lounge in Patong with special events and DJs of its own.

2) Factory Bar & Kitchen – Number 2 on our list is Factory Bar & Kitchen. Open from 5pm-3am if you’re looking for head start on the evening and want to get the party started early, Factory Bar is a great place to do some pre-drinking! One of the few, if not the only, nightclub/bar (also catering to foreigners) which begins in the afternoon as a relaxed open air atmosphere where friends or family can come enjoy a few fruity cocktails while tasting the delicious Italian pizzas Factory Bar & Kitchen is so well known for. As the night goes on and the Dj starts spinning (around 10pm), Factory slowly transforms into one of the best bars in Phuket, as the music gets louder and the dance floor fills. Already the biggest bar in Phuket, come high season, Factory will have its second level complete and ready for action!

3) Famous Nightclub – Number 3 on our list is one of the few other Patong nightclubs catering to mostly foreigners though they also have a bit of a Thai twist. A bit harder to find as it is somewhat off the path of the busy Bangla Road, it’s still just around the corner near the back end of Jungceylon shopping center which is Patong’s biggest mall. There are two choices when visiting Famous, the downstairs nightclub featuring international djs, various events and themed parties and poll dancing girls as well as their rooftop open air pool club for more of a relaxing evening with plush red velvet booths and soothing music. Although this is one of our favorites, we must add that this high season the nightclub was closed. We are unsure if this will continue throughout the upcoming seasons.

4) Hollywood Disco – If you’re looking for a traditional Thai nightlife experience while still sticking to the nightclub vibe, this is the place to go! With a few resident Djs playing the hot top 40’s and other international favorites, Hollywood is a must visit. From our experience, Hollywood is more of an after party place, as it is Thai owned and stays open much later than other clubs in the area. If you’re not dismayed by Thai girls often looking for a date, and are just looking for a place to keep the party going in true Patong style, then Hollywood is a fun option.

5) Tiger Disco – Tiger is another predominantly Thai club right in the heart of Bangla Road in Patong. We have included this on our list as many people come to Thailand without getting the full Thai experience. There are a select number of bars and clubs which although are mainly Thai and it may be more difficult to meet people, are definitely worth visiting. Tiger is a well known name here in Patong with bars and clubs popping up all over the place. Sporting traditional bar games like “connect 4” and “Hammer the nail” out in front of the bar and a more club like experience as you venture inside with huge paper mache walls and sculptures, it is worth stopping in for a drink or two. We also recently discovered that if your party includes 5 or more Thai girls upon arrival they give you a free bottle of alcohol! So if you’re feeling frisky, find a few Thai friends and make a night of it!

Things to do in Patong, Phuket, Thailand

Here is a list of some our favorite things to do in Patong, Phuket, Thailand.

1)      The Nightlife on Bangla Road. – There are few spot on this planet that will give you the thrills and sheer excitement that Bangla Road can provide. In Phuket one of our favorite activities is to head over to Factory Bar right across the street from Jungcylon Mall. They have an amazing variety of pizza, hearty pastas and fun cocktails. We will usually head there around 9 in the evening eat, drink and dance until maybe 11 then head over to Seduction Night Club which is right across the street to dance the night away. There are a ton of different clubs and bars along Bangla Rd. but those 2 are our favourite.

2)      Day Trips to Phi Phi Island and James Bond Island – Either or both of these activities are a must to when visiting Pantong. Being out in that crystal blue water with those incredible limestone formations is a truly amazing experience. I would recommend eith or both of these day trips. I prefer to take the speedboat option but either way is fun.

3)      The Monkey Trail in Phuket Town – There is a trail in Phuket Town that starts at the north end of town across the street from the Esso station that is a lot of fun. You start this hike up this gorgeous mountain and as you walk up you will be joined by a group of majestic wild monkeys. They are curious and not at all shy. My recommendation is to bring them some sort of treat. Bananas although cliché are their favorite. There are incredible views and a small fitness park that are also enjoyable.

4)      The Big Buddha – There is an enormous statue of the Buddha in the south part of the island. It can be reached by either hiking or driving. (Depending on physical fitness) The statue is impressive but it the views that will bring you back. The small island off the coast of Phuket are visible from this view point and it truly is a sight worth seeing.

5)      Snorkeling in Kata – Though this is an activity outside of Patong I wanted to include it on our list as it can be a lot of fun to hop on one of the many motorcycles for rent to hit up this beautiful beach. It is not as busy as Patong beach and on the north part of the shore there is beautiful coral to be explored along with a wide variety of tropical fish. There is snorkeling equipment available for rent right on the beach or you can purchase your own set of gear at one of the many stores in Kata.

6)      Water Sports on Patong Beach – There are a variety of water sports available to you on Patong Beach. These sports include Parasailing, Jet skiing,  Surfing, and snorkeling. The prices are very reasonable and it is a fun way to spend a day.

Thanks for reading our blog and we look forward to telling you about Patong Nightlife in our next blog.

Factory Bar’s very own break-dancing crew has been tearing up the dance floors at the best bar in Phuket and all over the island!  July 23rd 2011 marked the first annual b-boy competition in Patong’s Jungceylon Shopping center.  With lots of excitement hundreds of locals and tourists gathered from all over the island to watch as nine of the best dance crews battled their way to hold one of three spots in the championships soon to be held in Bangkok.  Power Storm, Factory Bar’s very own dance crew,  has been one of the biggest attractions at every open bar party since Factory opened its doors as one of the best bars in Phuket less than a year ago.  These six incredibly talented dancers have been riling up the crowds and showing their moves all over Phuket.  You can even find them dancing on the busy Bangla Road showing off some of Phuket’s best nightlife several nights a week showing off their skills with no charge to the public.  As one of the 9 teams competing in the big competition, Power Storm held their own as they battled their way to the top.  First, every team gave us a taste of their own unique style by performing their own unique routine.  The teams were then narrowed down to 6 where they battled freestyle in pairs to determine who would move on to the next round, Power Storm included.  The third place winners were awarded a sum of 10,000 Baht and great recognition for holding their own in the competition.  When Power Storm made it down to the final 2 teams, it quickly became the best break-dancing battle Thailand had ever seen!   The two teams, battling for 1st and 2nd place went back and forth and back and forth with incredible style and versatility for approximately 15 minutes before Power Storm was finally announced the winners!!  With a check for 30,000 Baht, and 1st place victory, and a trip to Bangkok, Power Storm had just become the best dance crew in all of Phuket!  It was truly an incredible event and there was no one prouder than us!

Just remember guys…We found them first!  And you can come see them perform twice a week at Factory Bar at every Open Bar Party.  We always have promoters on Bangla Road ready to sell you discount tickets to our events.  See you at the party!

Best Phuket Restaurant

Congratulations to Factory Bar & Kitchen for being voted “The Best Phuket Restaurant” by Phuket Magazine!!!

Factory Kitchen has only been open for several months now and has quickly made a reputable name for itself.  Using all fresh ingredients, our Italian chef, uses only Factory homemade recipes to create visual and mouth watering masterpieces.   With over 35 pizzas to choose from, there is something for everyone.  One of Factory Kitchen’s best options is the “Fantasia Pizza”.  Fantasia allows you to build your own pizza choosing from all of our fresh ingredients including Parma Ham, a variety of imported cheeses, meats, vegetables, olives, and many others you will not typically find in Thailand.  Often having unbeatable promotions like Buy 1 get 1 free pizzas, and 25% off the entire menu, there is no better deal in town.

As good as the pizza is, Factory Kitchen also offers a variety of other European dishes including burgers, delicious pastas, enormous salads, and several sides and tapas.  In a sea of overpriced merchandise and restaurants, Factory is a refreshing addition to the Phuket restaurant scene.  Many people come to Thailand yearning to experience true Thai cooking which you will find all over Phuket from little stands and food markets, but after a week or so of putting your taste buds in a whirl wind of new flavors, it’s nice to just sit back, relax, and enjoy some of the best familiar cooking that Phuket has to offer.

Located in the bustling Patong nightlife atmosphere, directly in the heart of Patong on Bangla Road our two level bar and kitchen is one place you don’t want to miss!  Factory’s floor to ceiling openings give the bar/restaurant a great open air feel while still being protected from Phuket’s unpredictable weather.

See one of our promoters on Bangle for the best deals in town.

LadyBoy’s in Patong, Phuket, Thailand

A big part of the attraction to Patong’s vibrant nightlife is of course, the ladyboys.   The term ladyboy, or kathoey, is used to describe a male-to-female transgender person or an effeminate gay male in Thailand.  Patong’s most well known area to view and have a photo taken with a ladyboy is Soi Crocodile off Bangla Road.  Soi Crocodile is a small road about halfway down Bangla filled with dozens of small beer bars and saturated with ladyboys dressed in their best cabaret costumes drawing in curious bystanders from off the street to drink and watch the show.  Every evening as soon as the sun goes down, the heels come out, the feather filled headdresses and sequined gowns are put on, and the dancing begins.  Throughout the evening you may see 15-20 different ladyboys on a small stage in the center of the street dancing the night away looking for tips and sometimes a bit more…

After you’ve walked around for an hour or so, had a few drinks here and there and stopped to watch the ladyboys, Factory is a great place to finish off the rest of your evenings free of ladyboys and the creepy old men trying to take them home for the evening.  Often during your strolls down Bangla Road, you’ll find some of our promoters trying to hand you flyers.  ALWAYS TAKE THEM!  It’s through our hard working promoters that you will find great deals on drinks, even FREE drinks, on any given evening.  It can be quite intimidating and sometimes annoying the first time you walk down Bangla Road with all of the vendors and promoters trying to give or sell you something and that is why you must learn when and when not, to stop and talk and understand that it is all part of the nightlife here in Patong.  Factory Bar, voted the Best Bar in Patong, is a great, non threatening place similar to what you are used to back home where you can enjoy the company of people just like you soaking up what Patong has to offer.

Phuket Nightlife in Patong

Phuket has not always been renowned for its club scene.  It wasn’t until the past few years that Phuket’s nightlife began to evolve.  While it has always been saturated with small (mostly Thai) bars and some nightclubs here and there, it wasn’t until recently that Phuket grew to become home of some of the best nightclubs and best bars in Thailand.  Factory Bar is located directly on the corner of Bangla Road and Rat-u-thit Road (Phuket’s party central), and is currently the biggest bar in Phuket.  Catering mostly to foreigners and tourists from all over the world, it has quickly made a name for itself since it’s opening in 2010.  Considered one of the few international bars/clubs in Phuket and being the biggest bar in Phuket, there is never a dull moment at Factory Bar as you’re surrounded by different people from all over the world!

Soi Bangla, Bangla Road, or most commonly known as “Bangla” is the heart of the bar/club scene on the island.  Also referred to by outsiders as “the walking street”, Bangla’s raunchy pulsating nightlife never fails to attract curious visitors every evening with its hundreds of flashing neon lights, go go girls dancing in the street, lady boy cabaret shows, karaoke bars, gentlemen’s clubs, bars and nightclubs.  Throw in a few dozen suit, cigarette, and ping pong show vendors along with massage ladys and tuk tuks (taxis) looking for their next fare, your eyes won’t know where to turn!

Amongst this vibrant nightlife there are probably in and around a hundred bars, pubs, go go bars if not directly on Bangla Road, then somewhere on the neighboring sois (streets).  Like most travel destinations dedicated to their nightlife, Patong awakens and becomes more alive as the sun goes down.  As soon as the last ray of light hits the beach, the metal doors are raised, the chairs are set outside, the music is pumped up, and the various daytime vendors call it a night.

Most of Bangla’s bars and pubs are considered “beer bars”, or small open air bars directly open to the public walking along the street where you will find about 10 or so ladies biding for your attention by enticing you to play games like connect four or hammer the nail.  Of course these bars are a great place to hang out for a beer or two, but If you’re looking for something a bit nicer where you can mingle and dance with people who are not two seconds from falling off their bar stool, then Factory Bar is the place to be.  A great feature to Factory Bar, is the fact that it is the biggest bar in patong,  soon to open it’s second level over looking the dance floor, and it is all open air.  This way you get the best of both worlds…  Earlier in the evening you can sit back relax and watch the festivities down below on Bangla Road, and as the night picks up and the DJ starts spinning Factory Bar instantly transforms itself into one of the best nightclubs on the Island!
